Climate and seasons
With its location, in the west of Switzerland and at the heart of Europe, Lausanne offers its inhabitants a temperate climate which is rather cold in winter and rather warm in summer.
Spring
Spring in Lausanne is pleasant but remains quite chilly until around the end of May. The possibility of skiing remains open until very late, notably in Crans Montana, which closes its ski slopes around the middle of April.
Summer
Summer in Lausanne is unpredictable, but fabulous when it is very warm. The lake and its
beaches offer the inhabitants and tourists some refreshment as well as an exceptional environment. Its
parks are also refreshment spots which welcome people who are tired of the intense heat.
Autumn
Autumn in Lausanne is faithful to the image we have of this season, with rain, grey skies etc. However, it can happen that the summer can last until the end of October or the start of November, which is to the great delight of its inhabitants and those who are fond of picnics and walks in the fresh air.
Winter
Every year, the first snows put Lausanne in a state. Its sloping and slippery roads make life hard for the
Transports Lausannois and cause chaos for traffic. Luckily, the railway lines keep their head high and allow, generally without any problem, the Vaudois population to easily get to the surrounding ski resorts. The winter days often give a magical decor to the city, with the sinking sun, white and silvery light reflected on the lake with the mountains in the background, which give colour to the sky at the start of the evening.
