Festivals

Lausanne is very close to large-scale festivals, such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Paléo Festival of Nyon and the Rock oz’ Arènes of Avenches and welcomes into its own walls numerous events of a smaller scale but nevertheless of very high quality. For example…

Festival de la cité

The Festival de la cité is a bubbling cauldron of classical music, poetry, theatrical creation, Francophone music, contemporary jazz, rock, street arts, public young theatre, contemporary dance, comedy, cinema and a festive atmosphere which spreads out over a period of one week during the summer period, The fact that all of the shows are free is one of the aces of the Festival. Apart from the classical music concerts which take place inside the Cathedral, there is a whole schedule of outdoor events. The event welcomes a very large public (an average of 120'000 people over 8 days), bringing together all age groups and social classes. This public is quite happy to pass from one type of art to another, without worrying too much about cultural tags.

LUFF – Lausanne Underground Film Festival

The festival www.luff.ch takes place every year, at the start of the autumn, between the Cinemathèque, the Théâtre de l’Arsenic and le Zinéma. Every year, the LUFF proposes, in addition to films scheduled for the competition, thematic retrospectives concerning international underground cinema, musical evenings and live shows. The schedule guarantees you encounters of the third kind, blood-and-guts, plastic decor etc.

Festival International de Danse de Sévelin

This international dance festival is organised by the Théâtre Sévelin 36 and has a very miscellaneous programme on offer. Brazilian, Canadian, Dutch or Icelandic companies, the different international contemporary dance scenes live side by side, to the great pleasure of the spectators. It takes place at the start of the autumn between the Théâtre Sévelin 36 and the Opéra de Lausanne.

Pully For Noise

The Pully for Noise festival takes place in summer and is perched in a clearing above Lausanne in the small town of Pully (Access: terminus of the bus 7, direction Val Vert). The strong point of this festival is its welcome on a small human scale. There is a large stage which can receive around a thousand people and three small halls which can contain one hundred to two hundred people, four drinks stands, two or three food stands, everyone feels at ease! This doesn’t stop the organisers from seeking out renowned international headline acts such as Feist, Red Snapper or even Dinosaur Junior!
