Nightlife

The nightlife of the inhabitants of Lausanne follows the events which happen there. Festivals, prompt evenings out in unusual places, concerts, themed evenings…nightowls are always on the lookout for the programmes on offer by the places and associations of the area. Here is a selection of places which promise you happy moments.

Firstly go for a drink…

La Bossette (Place du Nord 7) proposes numerous varieties of beer and all that goes with it in a very welcoming atmosphere, After the evening bar service, which lasts more or less until  10 p.m., La Bossette transforms itself, the lights are softened, the music (mainly rock) increases in volume, and the service is at the bar. Closing time is always something of a sport for the bar staff…everyone feels so at ease that nobody wants to leave!

Le Bar Tabac (Rue Beau-Séjour 7) is immediately pleasant. A large black counter, old advertisement posters, a heavy coat stand, a nice floor with disjointed and uneven floorboards. By day, the atmosphere is calm and relaxed and favourable for sipping an old-fashioned lemonade or a peppermint tea whilst leafing through the numerous magazines and newspapers available. By night, at the beginning or the end of the evening, you will be able to join in the surrounding laughter of the eclectic, happy crowd of customers. Le Bar Tabac doesn’t do meals, but it does however propose some delicious small aperitif snacks (sundried tomatoes, olives, sausages, etc.).

…then dance a little…

Le Loft is situated at the heart of the city. After having had a drink in the café of Le Loft, you will be able to dance the night away in the adjacent nightclub. On Wednesdays, you will find an evening dedicated to the sounds of house music, on Thursdays, basically students’ night, you will find music of all types, hits, special events (going from a dance show to a fashion show), on Fridays, there is a range of music which goes from R’n’B to Hip-Hop, passing by Reggaeton. Saturday nights are dedicated to the best of international electo music. Its through such evenings that Le Loft has acquired its excellent reputation over almost 8 years, making it comparable to other prestigious nightclubs of other European cities.

Le VO, Place du Tunnel 11, closes its doors around 4 a.m. during the week and around 5 a.m. at weekends. The main attraction of this place (excluding the frescos of rather dubious taste painted by the owner) is its cellar. It’s better to say it straight off, claustrophobes won’t like it down there. The spiral staircase brings you down to a small space of around forty square metres, where you will find a disco atmosphere, music which is most often funk, a bar at your disposal…the temperature rises very quickly! Festive atmosphere, sometimes bordering on the absurd…

Le Zinéma is found at Rue du Maupas 4 in the small passage beside the Café du Cygne. Le Zinéma is the first microcinema in Lausanne and offers a daily schedule of independent films. It organises some clubbing evenings every month. Mostly electro, the music is sometimes accompanied by projected images of local artist. This place is quite ‘underground’ and does’t usually fill up before midnight, or even one o’ clock in the morning.

…then eat a little

On Saturdays, Le Château, a traditional brasserie and pizzeria, doesn’t switch off its ovens before 4 a.m., and not before 2 a.m. on Fridays. Sit-in or take-away, their pizzas calm the stomachs of nightowls who have come from all over the place, tired after evenings of elector, salsa, funk or rock’n’roll evenings.

The Polli bakery, located in the central entrance hall of the train station, opens its doors at 5 a.m. daily. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, the place is literally under siege!
